Healthy Habits at Work

Scoring my (relatively) new job last summer was one of the biggest things that affected my lifestyle. I used to eat junk all the time when I was unemployed because it was very hard for me to have a firm routine to follow. Then I worked part time which still allowed me to spend copious amount of time at home. I could only imagine how bad working from home would be for me. I am the type who needs to be in an office space for my brain juices to keep flowing. I recently learned about WeWork, a company that provides creative office space, community, and services for people who need them, best part is they are in many different parts of the world--that could have been an option for me if I ever decided to work remotely. But as for now, having a typical 8 to 4:30pm job in an office with a great atmosphere has paved my way to eating better and in forming new habits to keep me healthier.

Watch Your Snacks.
When I started my new job, I knew something had to change. I was a little over 15 pounds heavier then and was not fitting in my clothes.  I started the change by becoming choosy when it comes to my snacks. I picked healthier options and moderated my munching with the help of snack baggies and my trusty food scale. People might think that's a little anal but trust me, it gives you a different perspective on eating moderately. I also prepared my lunches on Sundays or if it's a sandwich, on the morning of. Sandwiches are my fave for lunch because I am allowed to eat it at my desk so I can do *something else* during lunch break.

Walk Hard.
My #1 thing to do on my lunch breaks is to walk. Almost everyday, I walk more or less a mile around our office's neighborhood. I also use this time to catch up with my mom. We talk everyday. I have a very possessive relationship with her. LOL Just kidding! My mom's one of my best friends and we never run out of things to talk about.  We just talk and talk and talk and that makes my mid day walk seem less of an alternative workout.

Hydrate.
I make sure I drink lots of water. I have a 1-liter bottle that I use exclusively in the office. This helps me keep my water intake on track. My daily goal is at least two full bottles of water everyday---that seems a lot but on some days, I even end up drinking four bottles of it. This also gets me more active in a way because I need to get up and go to the bathroom every so often! ;)

Stretch.
When I went to the chiropractor and told him I work in an office, one of the things he asked me was, "How long do you sit in at your desk?" I answered honestly and said as long as I could hold my pee but that's not the point. The point is, when you sit for too long, your muscles think oh he/she's been in this position for so long now, we should stay in this position to support her back in case she decides to stay in this position longer. That's how back muscle pain starts, according to my chiro and that's also how he explained it to me. Now after that, I promised to stop confusing my back muscles and made sure I stretch my back as often as I can.

Look Away.
Being healthy is not limited to your food intake and how active you are. There are so many body parts that we take for granted and one of these is your eyes. Imagine holding your arm in a position where you're flexing it for an hour without relaxing it--that's how your eyes feel when you keep staring at your computer screen. You don't know it or feel it but the muscles controlling the eyes flex when you're staring at your monitor, or phone, or tablet. Now please feel free to look away!

Do you have any tips to share on how you keep your workplace healthy?

Let's Get Physical!

Since I am still raving about my lifestyle change, I'm linking up today with Let's Get Physical!

Confessions
-I am at my weakest in this certain time of the month when I'm craving everything. One minute I want the saltiest snack, the next minute, I want a whole chocolate bar. #bipolar
-I have been lazy in doing my full workout. I make it a point that I work my abs out all the time though!
-My back and chest muscles are weak. I have yet to do 15 [manly] push-ups in a row.
-I have not worked out as much as I used to. I've only been doing 1-2 full workouts a week. And very little workout on other days.

Facts
-I LOVE chocolate. To me, a day without chocolate is a day gone to waste.
-I do not like jumping jacks very much.
-I doze off easily.

Goals
-Lose 5 more pounds. They say the last five is the hardest to lose so I'm going to try hard to satisfy my cravings by eating fruits and refraining from snacking.
-Continue to make better choices. Ya know, like choosing veggie burger over a real hamburger.
-Eat out less.
-Be more active and keep on pushing the husband to try new activities together - these are what I have in mind - hiking, walk around our neighborhood, bike [this is actually something Ron wants to do].
-Do 20 straight regular push-ups
-Get back to doing my 6 full work outs every week.

Care to share your tips on staying fit? :)

Tips on Losing Weight

Sooo, who ate a lot, a lot yesterday? Hopefully this post inspires you to get rid of the calories you just took in from your Super Bowl party ;)

I was not really planning on losing weight in 2013 but after reading fitblrs (Tumblrs about fitness), blog posts about getting fit on my Google Reader and realizing that my favorite jeans are getting tighter, I knew I had to shred the fat off. I was aiming to shred the belly fat first but my thighs were the first ones to get skinny(-er)...it's the only part of my body that I wanted fat actually. LOL

I've been working out for 30 days now (going to be the 31st tonight). So far, I've lost at least six pounds which makes me pretty proud of myself. You probably have figured out by now that I worked on losing my weight in a safe way. No starvation and no working out too much here since I've experienced first hand that not eating does not do you any good, it just slows down your metabolism and that makes you gain weight faster. So here are the things I did this time...

Workout. I did Power 90, the easiest Beach Body workout. It's only 30-40 minutes a day and it's not as exhausting as P90X and Insanity. It's very doable and I recommend it to anyone who needs to insert some exercise in their day.

Eat healthy. I don't mean stay away from all the junk in the world. I mean, try to eat fruits instead of candy, fish and chicken breast instead of dark meat and/or grilled or roasted food instead of fried. It's easy, think of the picture below whenever you're tempted to eat fried foods. I honestly still eat junk food, I just make sure to only consume one serving.
Total Whole Grain Cereal and Blueberries
Romaine Lettuce with Tomatoes and Raspberry Vinaigrette and Baked Chicken Fillet
Chicken Sandwich in Whole Grain Flat Bun
Pan Fried Tilapia Fillet with Avocados, Tomatoes and Balsamic Vinaigrette

Prepare your food for the week on Sundays. It will also be easier on you when you get home from work and when you prepare your lunch for the next day. You also save a lot of thinking time with doing this!

Buy those fish fillets at the market. They are very easy to cook. I usually just panfry the tilapia fillets without oil on a nonstick pan after defrosting it and sprinkling salt and pepper on it. Make sure you defrost the fish the right way though.

Eat fruits...they are great for snacking. The sweetest apples are the Fuji ones so that's the one I get. Blueberries are addicting. Bananas are very filling but they can sure make you feel bloated.

Buy Total Whole Grain cereal. Check the Nutritional Facts vs other cereal brands. Total wins.

Buy new workout clothes. It's a good investment. :)

(and last but not the least)
Drink green tea. I always see it in the list whenever I read about fat burning food. Based on what I've read, it can help speed up the metabolic rate because its antioxidant effect helps the liver to function more efficiently. So drink it, because it's good for you.
So I hope you guys get some good tips from this! Oh and wish me luck that I keep on losing weight and continue to tone up!
