Fall Shopping

I've always been drawn to Free People, thanks to my mom's influence! She grew up in the 70s so Free People's boho style is very relatable to her. There's one thing we don't agree on though--cold weather. FPs's cold weather clothes are definitely stuff that I would wear if I had unlimited money to spend.

While shopping for Seattle clothes, a turtleneck top sort of caught my eye as it reminded me of Kendal Jenner. I know, I know, she's a model and she can pull anything off but guess what, I bet you everyone can pull of that trend! I bought the top by the way, but more on that later.

Another one of my fall must-haves is a saddle bag...or perhaps, English saddle colored bags. I got mine last summer and I love that the style carries over to fall. Despite shopping the Zara sale as soon as it started back in June, I still sometimes cannot resist going back and forth their site to check for more stuff I want from their sale...then I remind myself that I have a few new pieces that I have not worn since June so close my Zara.com tab and try hard to not open the website again. Hahaha!

I actually tried the fringe top at the store but the S felt too tight and did not bother trying on size M because I was tired and Ron was already done shopping the men's sale.

How much do you love that detail in this sweater? I was obsessed! During my trip to Houston earlier this year, my friends and I stopped by Forever 21 in downtown to pass time before the brewery opened. They had the buy one, get one free sale going on that time and even though I knew I had limited space in my luggage, the stubborn me still got a chunky cardigan (see here) and this chunky sweater. I mean, who wouldn't if it only costs $16.99 for both?! I should also mention that I got the Free People cropped lace tube from Marshalls for $10. WIN!

If there was a kind of clothing that I don't have much of, it would be sweaters. I mean, that should be a given when living in LA. You have no choice but to have so many light cardigans and tops. Our weather is so unpredictable sometimes that I feel the need to wear a top and a cardigan almost everyday.

Holiday Wish List Idea

I have been spoiling myself as of late. In my mind, I have never had a normal job for so long that I need to make myself feel that I can again get what I want for myself. I am also in the process of breaking away for everything trendy and rebuilding my closet to what I feel comfortable wearing. I think I have had enough with buying statement tops and now aim to make every top a blank canvas. Yay for changes!

So back to my point. The holidays are here and for the first time ever, I don't have a loooong list and I really know what I want. Everything else I want, I have decided to get for myself which I think is fair that now, I am employed. So here goes.



  • My love for taking pictures is pretty intense right now and the moment I found out about the new lens Canon is releasing, I got super excited. It's gotten great reviews too!
  • Skagen Ditte is a good replacement for DW watches. You get the same vibe for a (much) lower price. 
  • Do I really have to explain why I love Sam Smith's album? #EARGASM
  • I don't think I could go through another cold season without a parka. But I heard from a little (beautiful) birdie that she already ordered this for me. :D

When I got $25 for eBay for doing on of Influenster’s campaigns, I decided to try and buy clothes from no-name stores I've never ordered from. I mean, what did I have to lose really? It was kind of free money and there are tons and tons and tons of stuff on eBay that I can buy.

There’s this one top that I have been eyeing on from an online retailer based in Korea (I believe) but I thought maybe I can find it cheaper on eBay so I copied the name and pasted it on eBay. Guess what! I found the same item for at least 50% less! The bargain shopper in me could NOT refuse this one anymore.

If you have not really been to the depths of shopping on eBay, you might ask, what are the pros and cons of buying from eBay?
Pros
  • Free shipping for most of the products.
  • Great customer service – their English is not perfect but they always try to make every customer have a positive experience. They even email to see if you’ve received the item.
  • Super cheap!
  • There is always a variety of items to choose from.
  • Buy it now option. ICYMI eBay is not only for auctions anymore.

Cons
  • It takes a LONG time to be delivered because it’s from China.

How Do You Like Boyfriend Jeans?

I have been sporting BF jeans since Ron and I started dating because of our random sleepovers and me not ever willing to wear the same bottoms two days in a row even when I washed it. However, I’ve never really gotten my own pair from the women’s section till Urban Outfitters’ sale last weekend where I got the UO boyfriend jeans in the pic above for only $15. *victory dance*

I have been playing dress up and I’ve learned that you can wear pretty much everything with boyfriend jeans—all you need is guts and know that BF jeans also work for wider hips (which I do have)! ;)

I am Afraid of Store Brand Products

Last night, in between bothering Ron and playing with Fox, I decided to check my email. As it turns out, my boss is asking me to take today off so I can help her with staging a home all day on Monday. Of course I don't mind that. I mean, a Friday off? Yes please! I later realized that my dog is going to have dental prophylaxis today. This means that his teeth is going to get cleaned, which also means he needs to be at the pet hospital for most of the day--8:30am to around 4:30pm to be specific.

So now that all my chores are pretty much done (except for laundry because I need a reason to stay at home on Sunday), and I have also done my errands, what's left to do is rest and cuddle with the dog. But then again, the dog is out so here I am blogging my time away.

My point is, I miss my dog.

My next point is, which is the actual point of this post is that I don't like buying store brand products because they have a reputation of not being as good as branded ones. However, in my Economics class, I learned that those Costco, Target and Walmart pay the same manufacturers that make branded items. With that insight, and the strict budget constraint that I'm putting myself into, I decided to try out Walmart's Equate Cocoa Butter Conditioning Body Lotion. To be honest though, I saw an open bottle at the store so I sniffed and tried it. As it turns out, it is very much alike my favorite Vaseline Total Moisture Cocoa Radiant Lotion.

I compared the ingredients and the only thing missing is: Dihydroxypropyl Trimonium Chloride. And no, I cannot pronounce nor spell it. I copied and pasted that. ;)

The texture's almost the same too. I noticed that Equate's is a little more runny but if you've used Vaseline, you'll know that that lotion is extra creamy but not as creamy as Jergens.

I'm really excited to try this product and I will most definitely update this post and let you guys know how it works on my skin!

Kimonos

Happy Friday! Whether you have awesome plans for the weekend or not...I'd like to wish you a productive one. Why? Because I need someone to wish that for me. I have to finish a novel by Tuesday, and also start studying for my final exams. Luckily, I don't have to take my final exam for my other class because I have enough points to get an A already. :)

Anyway, my point today is to talk about kimonos. These almost sheer piece of clothing especially when you need something to spice up your plain old boring outfit.

I have three kimonos so far, one round black, one black with white polka dots and one gray that has a thicker fabric and is perfect for transitioning in between colder and warmer temps...which hasn't really happened here in LA for the past year. I have room in my closet for more, however, two words: budget constraints. LOL! Seriously though, I have been trying not to go into Cotton On because I have been eying one of their kimonos (not the on below!).

Sometimes I wish we had more money, then I think about how materialistic I could get, then back away from the thought...so I just think of clothes and window shop online. My nights always include visiting my "flavor of the week" online store, adding tons of things in my cart, then shutting down my computer. So much fun, I tell ya! :p

Oh! Oh! Ron surprised me with a purse last weekend. I gotta share this story in my next post! I swear, my husband can be way too sweet sometimes! <3

Once a Bargain Shopper, Always a Bargain Shopper

Since this year started, I haven't had that I-want-to-shop-and-no-one-can-stop-me mood until last Saturday. Although I can't say I want to do it again next week because I honestly do not, I sure missed the feeling! Having a very supportive husband (sorry I need to say this every time I talk about shopping but I really love it that Ron loves to shop) helped too. My haul wasn't super big or expensive. As you guys know, I'm not into expensive stuff because I am not the most careful person when I eat, and I am aware that every trend fades. ;) Also, I need to ask myself a bunch of questions before I buy something:

  • Do you have that I-cannot-wait-to-wear-this feeling?/Does it fit in my wardwobe? When I try something on, I make sure that after seeing how it fits on me,  I have that said feeling, and that I can already see myself wearing it with the other things in my closet. If I tell myself "I can wear this when I go to [insert some event/part that has not been planned yet]," then it's a no go. I've learned not to buy stuff because they're cheap the hard way. Buy it because you need it.
  • How's the quality? I've tried on some items that fit good on me but when I hug myself, I hear some stitches rip, and because I was in denial, I tried on a bigger size. Guess what. Even if it was loose on me, I still heard some ripping while I was unbuttoning it. That's when I checked the stitches, and they were no good. 
  • How often will I wear it? A $25 top that has good quality that I will only wear once or a $12 top that has decent quality that I know I will wear and last for at least 3 times? The latter will always win. Always.
  • Which top will I get rid of if I buy this top? I have never been so serious about the "one in, one out" rule in my life. I've de-clutterd my closet of things that I have not worn in so long and clothes that I don't think I will wear anymore. I will be honest, it was a hard process at first but it became so much fun for me. I love getting rid of that extra closet rod to double up on the space in my closet! 
  • Can I actually afford it? If I'm using my credit card because I don't have the money YET but I know that it'll just pile up on my debt, I will (now) just won't buy it. I shouldn't even be shopping, to be honest with you. I've learned this the hard way. Like they say, don't buy anything with the money you do not have. If you're debt free, and have the money in your account but are using your credit card to earn points --- that's a different story and I bet you guys know where I'm going with this. [On a side note, did you know Capital One has this thing called Quicksilver where you get 1.5% cashback for ALL purchases?)
  • Now for the hardest question: Do I need it? If the answer is yes, I'll get it. If I answer myself with a no, then it's a no go. It's all been yeses for me lately though because I need to wear "nicer" clothes to work as opposed to the very casual outfits I wore at the place I used to work at. Also, Ron and I have been good about this lately and I love it. 

Luckily, the answer to all of these questions were positive so I was able to get quite a few items! :)

Things I Learned from My First Yard Sale

My friends and I sold our preloved stuff at a yard sale last Saturday and I did not expect it to be that way. I thought it would be like you know, you walk to this place and people would be nice to your clothes, not messing them up and stuff. But NO. It was Walking Dead status. We have not even finished setting up our stuff and people were already digging through our bags of clothes.

Nonetheless, I think it was successful! Considering that my phone alarm did not go off, and we were late, and that I woke up at exactly 7:00am and still had to drive to our friends'. Oh well, at least we made it in time for the beginning of the yard sale! :)

So what did I actually learn from this experience?
Post about your yard sale online. Facebook groups, Craigslist, GarageSaleFinder, GSALR...those sites. Or better yet, Google "garage sale listings."

Eat breakfast. Because breakfast. ;)

Have cash, preferably singles, ready. ATMs only dispenses cash in $20 increments meaning so be prepared to give people who do not have the exact amount change. Thank God for Ron for saying yes when I asked him if he could please withdraw money for this purpose. :)

Wake up and set up early! Like I said, my alarm did not go off and we were late. My friend kind of start late too and when she opened their garage door, people were already parked outside of their house waiting for them to set up. When she brought out her stuff, people WANTED to open the bags themselves but she asked them not to and to wait for her. They listened...I think and when they got the go ahead, they rummaged through all her stuff. When Ron and I got there, almost all the bags were emptied out and were all spread on the floor. So what happened when Ron put down the first two bags? They went through them. So me labeling the bags: $2, $3, $4 and $5 became pointless and I found it hilarious.

Forget sentimental value. You have not worn that dress in a year so it's essentially not doing anything good to you so SELL IT.

Prepare to sell your things for really cheap prices. Almost dirt cheap! As I've said, I had a plan. I though I had everything figured out when it came to pricing. Little did I know, I knew just a little above nothing on yard sales. People buy stuff in bulk, ask for a REALLY GOOD discount and walks away happy. Every time people ask for a discount, I just tell myself: I was going to donate them anyway, at least I'm earning something. BETTER THAN NOTHING.

 Have a pen, paper and calculator ready. You never know when you'll be needing them!

Watch your earnings. I had a crossbody bag on me the whole time because I was scared to lose the money I was earning. LOL

The day was not only for the yard sale though, a lot more things happened actually...
-Our many trips to the dog park finally paid off. It did not only boost Fox's confidence in regards to interacting with other dogs but it also boosted our confidence in him that he will socialize well with other dogs even without our supervision. He got along so well with our friend's dog, JR...except for the few times when I heard him cry a bit. The kids said they were trying to scratch each other. 
-After so long, we finally saw our friends again!!!

-Our lunch was the best! Our friends are such great company. They, without fail, make us laugh our lungs out every time. It's insane how many times you can hear the same joke or punchline but be able to laugh as if it's the first time you're hearing it. I love them! Wish we were complete though ;)
-My goddaughter I were best friends that day. ;) She loves me, but for some reason, he doesn't like Ron. It used to be the other way around when she was smaller! Oh Laen... <3

Hers and His: Topshop and Topman

Ron and I have been in a Topshop and Topman craze for the past few weeks. I have been finding myself and him looking through their site, especially their sale items. Although he could not pick any item he likes from Topman, I am able to find some for them and just ask him if he wants them when he gets home. Black pants. Because I need black pants. Like, REALLY need them. The only black trouser I own are way too tight right now. Hahaha! I've worn this pair for an interview already and hopefully in many more to come or maybe that's the last interview I'm going to wear it at...if you know what I mean. :)

A bikini top and a bottom. You're probably thinking, "It's winter, why would you need those," right? Well, try living in California and you'll know why. LOL We have been having summer weather here since the week of Christmas. It's not so fun for me. I don't like hot weather as much as I should.

I also bought a bag with this order. I got it so I have something to use when I start to go back to school. I can use it casually too because the size is perfect for my stuff and the extra stuff I bring for Fox (you know, pet wipes, poop bags, treats, food, etc). I can also stick a light cardigan in there in case the weather acts weird...like it has for the past few of weeks. Unfortunately, they did not have it on stock anymore when they were packing my order. I was really sad and was so disappointed that I got to a point where I told Ron, "Sorry if I'm being materialistic, I just really wanted that bag." On the bright side, Topshop offered me expedited shipping for my next order. :)


Topman Goods:
Chino Pants. We got this in navy and gray but Ron already put the navy one in the laundry basket so let's just skip it. We ordered size 32L because they were out of 32R. When the pants arrived in the mail, Ron fell in love with the cuffed bottom of the pants. We always skip those when we're at the mall because we thought it's not Ron's style. Clearly, we were wrong. It is indeed his style and they look good with his Jordans.

Meggings. Don't worry, Ron won't be wearing this in public. Probably under his snowpants if we ever go snowboarding or under his jeans when we go somewhere cold. Let's say, Seattle...which is happening in 5 weeks! So excited!!!

Gap Haul

Because when you get an email that says you can get an additional 50% off sale items, you take that opportunity. ;) I have always needed white tops. I feel like I don't find a lot that has good quality. Sometimes the fabric is too thin and sometimes, I just know they would shrink. Also my white tops I have shrunk already!

One good mail Monday, the tights I ordered for myself and my mom, and my two white tops came in the mail. I was so excited to share them with you guys! No outfit photos though because I already put them in the wash and I might wear them this weekend when we go out of town.

Random Shopping at TJ Maxx

Okay people, I could not sleep so excuse my off timed post.

After our dinner yesterday (technically since it's 2:14am as I'm typing this), Ron and I went to TJ Maxx to burn some calories. I walked around the store and found a lot of things that I liked including two Michael Kors Hamilton bags and a cream colored Dooney and Burke bag. I did not buy any of them because...well, I don't need them.

Random Shopping


1) My next stop always is the pets section where we (finally) got Fox a collapsible travel cup. We really need it because we always just end up asking for a small cup of water that we ourselves accidentally spill in the restaurant's patio and the dog ends up licking water off the ground and that means there's a chance that Fox will lick the floor and we have to ask for more water. #lazy
 
2) The home section is my favorite part of the store because I'm starting a project in our house and I'm in search of frames. I found one that we both liked so I picked that up. I also got drawer organizers because to be honest with you, our drawers in the bathroom are a mess! From hair ties, product samples, random bracelets, they've both just transformed into junk drawers.

3) On our way to the register, I stopped by the beauty stuff that are on clearance and found Essie nail polish for $3. I did not want to pass that up so I got one too in the Downtown Brown shade.

All White Shopping

When I tweeted about shopping on Tuesday, I was serious. I mean, an additional 50% off items that are already on sale? Yes please! I haven't gotten them yet so I'm not sure yet if I'm returning anything but I've checked the reviews of course! For some reason, I was looking for a lot of white clothes. I'm still trying to figure out why but I have a thing for white clothes right now. It may be that I'm going back to neutral colors in my wardrobe so if that job comes my way, I have a wardrobe that's ready to go.

I did not plan on buying anything but this shopping impulse may be affected by my decision to pay for quality over quantity. Gap has a good reputation on quality so I said yes to their products. So there, I bought three tops...


While shopping, I also found items that I "saved for later" in my Piperlime cart and noticed that everything is white too. I think I picked these because I was supposed to order one for our White Christmas Party. Good thing I did not buy anything because not everyone wore a white top at the party. Boo!

I have been window shopping online since last night and and while I'm proud that I have not spent over a hundred on my post holiday shopping (because you know, I'm a star bargain shopper LOL), I'm a little ashamed that I keep wanting to buy stuff when I know that I already have enough as it is. But back to my point, since my mood lately has been "I'd rather be home than anything else," I have been spending a few hours in front of my Ron's laptop, browsing sales, closing tabs, checking out other sales, and so on. My current favorites are Nordstrom.com, HM.com, Topshop.com, and VictoriasSecret.com. Although I'm not going to post about anything I want from VS, because they sell mostly lingerie, here are some of the things I've been eyeing on.

I saw the MK bangle at Nordstrom last week and I almost went crazy and bought it. LOL But I'm just not one who will buy stuff in full price especially when I know that things like it go on sale after a couple of months. Now about the bangle, it's pretty, edgy and classy that I can see myself wearing it all the time.

A Break from Chores

Technically, everyday is for me to do chores but ever since the holiday season started (which starts REALLY early in our home), my mood became all about the holidays that I did not care about anything else that does not involve the holidays. I know, so bad! But things are getting better!


I'm doing lots of chores today. Like, a lot. My I spent two hours this morning running errands. Now I'm on the bed, resting while the whites get done from the dryer. Oh and after that I need to vacuum our bedroom. Hopefully, I have time to organize my closet before it's time to prepare dinner!

Also, I have been working on bettering my makeup collection so I've made two trips to Ulta in the past week. One was on New Year's Eve morning with one of my girls and her baby-slash-my goddaughter. Another was with Ron - he went to the Best Buy in the same shopping center while I walked to Ulta and wander off.

So far, I've gotten two tubes of liquid foundation, three eyeshadow palettes, a bottle of volumizing shampoo, a bottle of makeup remove and a new makeup brush. Seriously, that true glow sonic I received for review came in very handy!

Anyway, gotta go fold clothes!

Beauty Talk: I Used to Not Like Wearing Foundation

The first time I had foundation put on my face, it was horrible. It was at my dad's sister's wedding. On her wedding day, she hired these make up artists who I assume only bought foundation that would fit people with fair skin. I guess because in the Philippines, one of the most annoying things people there want is to get fair skin. I know, I don't get it either.

So, the guy (yes, it was a guy) started putting the foundation on my face, saying it looked perfect. To be honest, I was not happy because my face was waaaay whiter than my neck. I mean really? It was someone's wedding so I let it pass.

By the time I saw the pictures, I was so sure, I would never wear foundation again. EVER.

But then my girl, Y and I went to the women's conference in 2012 where we lined up for a free mini makeover at Benefit where the lady put foundation on me and when I got home, Ron was staring at my face while telling me how good it looks. He says he still prefers me without make up though. So that was my second encounter and it was a good one.


Third was on our wedding day and I HAD to wear foundation or else I will not look as good as I did in the pictures. LOL Since the place I got my face done that day got good reviews and it was in fact already 2012 and there had been a lot of innovation in the beauty industry, I was less worried about looking cakey on my wedding day. Also, I told the lady who put make up on me that I am terrified of wearing foundation because I had a bad experience. She was super nice and made sure to test the products on my jawline and showing it to me before she proceeded.
After this, I was convinced, I want need want/need my own foundation for when we or I go to parties.  So now it's been over a year and I still do not have my own bottle of liquid foundation and I need help. What brand do you guys use? I'm definitely not going to wear it everyday so I'd rather stick with more economical brands (aka pharmacy brands) than expensive ones because I hate seeing things go to waste. Also, I'm a tightwad. LOL

I have tried Benefit's Toasted Beige and it looked really good on my face. Also, it was very light and did not irritate my skin - which is good because I get rashes very easily. But it's $36 a bottle. For a girl who doesn't wear makeup everyday, I think it's too much.  Are there any good pharmacy brands out there?

As you may already know, Ron and I are huge fans of Black Friday, and as this years result, we both now have two new gadgets. One is because I need to be in (talked about it here) and another is because Ron's old laptop is so ugly and clunky and just ready to dive into a dumpster. I'm not exaggerating. His old Vaio is so old that you need to type slowly to make sure you don't mess up your passwords when logging on to something. LOL Anyway, the husband finally got himself a new laptop! Which one? This one.

And while I was taking the second picture, some little creature walked in on the fun...
...and then he lay on the bed and did not want to leave...

Please feel free to congratulate my husband for being able to withstand the pain of using a six-year-old laptop. He's stilll getting used to the new interface but I'm sure he'll get the hang of it. As for me, I am still happy with my five-year-old Dell XPS. Because it is a Dell XPS. #IAmAboutToGeekOut
